The Palace of Love The Demon Princes Book 3 eBook Jack Vance Reviews

Third revenge.

Girlfriends are part-time, killing your crimelord enemies is a full time occupation. So Gersen now turns his newly acquired wealth from the previous book to the task of getting to Falushe, the next on his list.

Yet again he has to find the planet the guy hangs out on, find out which person he is - which is kind of interesting, overlord megalomaniac types that like to hide who they are. Be a bit easier if they paraded around like Ming the Merciless, but a much shorter series.
Only recommended if you've read "The Book of Dreams" and strongly enjoyed it. This is pretty much hack work.

This comes from the 1960s, when Jack Vance's writing was at its most creative. Some contents seem to be influenced by the period in 1967, love was "in". That doesn't affect the overall quality, which is slightly better than the random and unconvincing first book.

More than most authors, Vance has a distinctive science fiction writing "voice", which is that of an urbane, sophisticated, humorous and slightly removed observer. In fact, he's fond of including addenda reading as academic sociology or travel guides.

Unfortunately Vance's voice is not discriminating, and particularly minor characters tend to sound the same. That goes equally for his elaborate descriptions of clothing and locales, which often seem completely random. This makes for unchallenging reading, since there's no profound meaning in the clothes or locale or characterization that readers will be required to remember.

In this book three characters are given extended roles, and even if this is not "character development", it's a little less like having a kaleidoscope of meaningless shards endlessly playing in front of your eyes, which seems to be Vance's penchant when he's not especially involved with his material.
The Palace of Love (1967) is the third SF novel in the Demon Princes series, following The Killing Machine. The initial volume in this sequence is Star King.

In the previous volume, Gersen performed a task for the IPCC. When Kirth returned with the body of the wanted man, he learned from the IPCC that the other man involved was probably Kokor Hekkus. He learned that Kokor Hekkus was probably a hormagaunt. And he learned that the fictional planet Thamber might really exist.

Later, Gersen discovered that Kokor Hekkus was involved in kidnapping many people, including the children of a high level personage of the Institute. The Institute had a policy of not paying ransom, but Kirth talked the VIP into providing the money required to free his children.

Gersen also ransomed Patch and thereby got controlling interest in the Patch Engineering Works. He inspected the strange machine commissioned by Kokor Hekkus. Then he talked Patch into leaving a message for his contact with Kokor Hekkus.

In this novel, Kirth Gersen is a young human without any living relatives. All except his grandfather were killed during a slave raid on Mount Pleasant. He learned that the Demon Princes were responsible and set himself to kill them all.

Alusz Iphigenia Eperje-Tokay is a princess of Gentilly. She returned to the Oikumene with Gersen.

Viole Falushe is a Demon Prince. He is third on Gersen's list, but his current identity and whereabouts are not known. He dwells in the Palace of Love.

Kakarsis Asm is a Master Venefice on Sarkovy. As such, he is a master of poisons.

Navarth is the Mad Poet. He revels in scandals, especially his own.

In this story, Gersen and Alusz Iphigenia are keeping company, but she is tiring of his monomania. She doesn't understand his motivation nor his interests in the Demon Princes. Their affair is cooling down.

Gersen and Alusz Iphigenia go to Sarkovy. He has read that Kakarsis was convicted of selling poison at a discount and will cooperate with the guild; that is, he will take an experimental poison. Gersen wants to talk with him about Viole Falushe.

Gersen learns that Kakarsis had first met Viole on Sarkovy as a boy named Vogel Filschner. The young man had a ship load of young women for sale. He sold two of them to Kakarsis. Kakarsis later sold the two to a slave dealer.

Gersen gets to the names of the two women and the dealer. Then he checks with the dealer, who had sold the women to two tapestry factories. Gersen checks with the factories and buys the surviving woman. He gets more information about Vogel and then frees the female slave.

The affair on Sarkovy sickens Alusz Iphigenia and she wants out of Gersen's life. He sets up an arrangement for her income and says goodbye. Then he arranges to buy the Cosmopolis magazine and get credentials as a senior writer. He starts investigating Vogel.

This tale brings Gersen to Navarth. Vogel had known and idolized Navarth as a boy. He had left Earth, but he maintains contact with Navarth. The poet had a young woman living with him that resembled someone from Vogel's past.

Gersen manages to terminate Viole. The next installment in this sequence is The Face.

Highly recommended for Vance fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of strange cultures, aien planets, and a bit of romance. Read and enjoy!

I am somewhat surprised to see the mediocre reviews for such an original and well written story. These books were radical at the time, and are even more radical today. The current fantasy scene is dominated by writers like George Martin, Patrick Rothfuss or Brendan Sanderson who produce laborious and self-indulgant 800-page tomes that are part of extended series. These books are set in virtually identical psuedo-Medieval Magic Kingdoms and entire volumes go by in which there is virtually no progression of the plot line, character development, etc. Sound familiar to all the Robert Jordan survivors? Compared to such windbags, reading an author like Vance, who in 200 pages always furnishes an original and clever plot, invents at least one new world and five new societies, and writes witty and sophisticated dialogue is refreshing and educational.
You can't beat good Jack Vance. Absolutely love his work ...
