This is an unparalleled guide to effective public speaking. I had originally come across the 2007 edition of this book last year, and it saved my life multiple times during professional presentations at work. So, when I learned that Gary Genard has a new edition, I absolutely had to check it out. This new edition is bigger (six more chapters) and better! I like how this book tells you not just WHAT to do but WHY you should do it, and HOW this will help you become a better speaker. It is easy to read with light-hearted humor by the author and helpful exercises at the end of some chapters. My favorite is the two-minute speech warm-up. I cannot possibly count the number of times this exercise has improved my voice and body language at the beginning of a presentation. Finally, Genard's book is not merely for those who work in business or communication. It is indeed for every professional. Whether one is a student, a professor, a salesperson or a politician, we speak for impact all the time. Genard's book walks you through the process of how to have that desired impact on your audience. You cannot go wrong with this purchase if you have the patience and dedication to follow his advice.Product details

How to Give a Speech EasytoLearn Skills for Successful Presentations Speeches Pitches Lectures and More! (Audible Audio Edition) Gary Genard Cedar Maitland Audio Books Reviews
I've read this book front to back -- hundreds of great tips, plus in-depth information on special topics, e.g., presentation strategy (direct or indirect), simplifying and selling complex concepts, one-minute impromptu speaking. Gary Genard did a great job on this expanded edition. There are more examples for business professionals, academicians, and politicians. It is well-organized in a "point-by-point" format.
This book is a "must read" for anyone interested in bringing his or her public speaking skills to the next level. As a professional writer and educator, I highly recommend it!
I've been giving speeches off-and-on for many years, at one point several a month. So I've perused books on public speaking from time to time to see if I can pick up any tips. Most concentrate solely on either delivery or structure (but typically not both), and many make excessive use of author anecdotes to get the point across.
I came across a copy of How to Give a Speech, and the first thing that struck me was its compact size. I thought that it either didn't contain much, or was designed as a field reference manual - tight and to the point. A quick glance at the Table of Contents told me that this text was designed to be a working reference and different that what I had typically seen.
The author (Gary Genard) is apparently (in addition to being a speech coach) a professionally-trained stage actor. I found this interesting for two reasons typically, cross-discipline authors have better insights to a topic, and secondly, I would have expected the book to be more about delivery technique - and less so on structure, content, analyzing the audience, and other practical speaking tips. Again, the author surprised me considerably by having a very balanced approach, and also organizing the book into 75 very practical "tips". Chapter 6, "Delivering Your Critical Messages," alone is worth the price of admission, especially the tip on preparing a speech when you're pressed for time. That one (Tip #37 - How to Prepare a Speech in 15 Minutes) - will be a lifesaver for those on various committees, boards, corporate executives, etc. I don't care how good you think you are - a tight checklist that can be referenced at the last minute can make a difference is how a speech comes across - did you nail it, or flub the opportunity?
All in all - if you give speeches, or aspire to give speeches - this handy little book ought to be a ready reference or a carry-along on that next business trip. I learned quite a bit from it, and I already thought I knew a lot about public speaking from 20+ years of experience.
There are no comments on this book. I used very little of the material. Will keep this book for future reference.
Excellent book for speakers
Excellent and very Effective Book. Totally recommend for those who want to calm down their anxiety infront of public and present their speech with confidence and clarity. Loved it
This book is helpful. It have everything you want to know about giving a speech.
I just bought this book and I was actually more impressed than I was expecting... It answered every question I had and way beyond.. My favorite part about the book is how what we think is the most important thing to do, and prepare for, when we are going to give a speech, is actually the least important thing... I didn't realize how powerful and important it is to know how to use our arms and hands, our smile, the way we stand, and how we say our words, and the tone we use .. compared to what we are going to talk about... I read this book in one day and now I am getting ready to read it again.. I am going to keep reading it until all of the points that are made become natural to me... I give it five stars..
